How to renew a Nigerian passport from the UK

You apply and pay on the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) portal, then either book a biometrics appointment or, for eligible adult renewals, enrol contactlessly and post your documents to the High Commission in London. The High Commission charges a £20 administrative fee on top of the passport fee.

What you need for a renewal

This list follows the High Commission's requirements for re-issue of a standard passport. Applicants under 18, and anyone changing a name after marriage or divorce, need extra documents listed on the same page. Note that a change of name by deed poll is not accepted.

Renewing in person

  1. Apply and pay online. Complete the renewal application on the NIS portal and print the form and payment receipt.
  2. Book biometrics. Book on appointments.immigration.gov.ng and print the booking.
  3. Attend with your documents. The High Commission takes immigration and consular submissions from 9:00am to 1:00pm.
  4. Wait for the passport by post. The High Commission says there is no physical collection once biometrics have been taken, so the passport is posted back in the Royal Mail C4 special delivery envelope you supply.

Renewing by post: contactless enrolment

The High Commission says the contactless process is not available to applicants under 18 or to first-time applicants. If you qualify, you enrol your own biometrics and then post these to the High Commission:

Your NIN

A NIN is part of the renewal checklist. If you do not have one, companies licensed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) enrol Nigerians abroad and charge a fee, while enrolling in Nigeria is free if you hold a valid passport. NIMC's list of licensed diaspora partners, which includes the High Commission in London, is at nimc.gov.ng/diaspora.

How long it takes

The High Commission's pages do not give a processing time. The NIS service standard for a renewal is 21 days after successful enrolment.
